How ICL Surgery Can Correct Severe Myopia and Hyperopia
In South Korea, where vision plays a crucial role in education, work, and daily life, the demand for reliable and lasting vision correction has never been higher. But what happens when you're told that LASIK or LASEK isn't suitable for your eyes? For patients with severe myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), the search for an alternative can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, there is an option that offers hope, precision, and life-changing results: ICL Surgery, or Implantable Collamer Lens Surgery.
At Gangnam Joeunnun Vision Clinic, we specialize in offering customized, high-tech solutions for vision correction. Led by Dr. Kim Jun-heon, a pioneer in refractive eye surgery and SMILE techniques, we’ve seen firsthand how ICL surgery can restore clarity to patients once considered ineligible for traditional laser procedures. For these individuals, ICL has opened a door to a world they once viewed through foggy lenses — literally and figuratively.
Let us guide you through what ICL is, who it’s for, and why it might be the most transformative vision correction solution you’ve never heard of.
When people think of vision correction, they typically imagine laser procedures like LASIK or LASEK, which reshape the cornea to correct vision. These are effective for many patients—but they aren’t suitable for everyone. Patients with high prescriptions, thin corneas, or dry eye may face significant risks with corneal laser surgery.
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery works differently. Instead of removing or reshaping any part of your eye, ICL involves placing a soft, biocompatible lens inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. This lens corrects your vision from within—without altering your cornea or inducing dry eye symptoms.
Think of it as inserting a contact lens that stays in place permanently, offering crystal-clear vision while preserving your eye’s natural structure.
The lens is made from Collamer, a collagen co-polymer that is biocompatible with the human eye, meaning it integrates safely without causing inflammation or rejection. Once in place, the lens acts like your internal pair of glasses—only sharper, more stable, and immune to fog or scratches. And unlike contact lenses that dry out or shift, the ICL remains perfectly positioned and invisible.
Korea has among the highest rates of myopia in the world. In cities like Seoul and particularly in Gangnam, where academic pressure and screen exposure begin at a young age, it’s common to see patients with prescriptions exceeding -10.00 diopters. For these patients, laser surgery may not be safe or effective.
Patients with high hyperopia (+4.00 or more) also face challenges. LASIK is often less predictable in farsighted corrections, and older patients may already be developing presbyopia, further complicating results. For some, wearing progressive glasses or switching between reading and distance glasses becomes a frustrating routine.
It corrects high levels of myopia and hyperopia safely.
It offers better quality vision with fewer side effects like halos or glare.
Patients who were once considered ineligible for vision correction due to extreme prescriptions now have access to a proven, durable, and flexible solution. In fact, many patients with prescriptions over -12.00D or +5.00D experience better visual outcomes with ICL than they could achieve with LASIK.
At Gangnam Joeunnun Vision Clinic, the ICL surgery process is refined for comfort, speed, and safety. Our process is also deeply personalized. We never rush the diagnostic phase, because we believe the success of surgery starts long before the operating room.
Using ZEISS diagnostic tools, we measure the anterior chamber depth, corneal curvature, white-to-white distance, and endothelial cell count. These readings are used to custom-order a Collamer lens designed precisely for your eye. This detailed analysis ensures the lens fits perfectly and performs optimally.
It typically takes 2 to 3 weeks for the custom lens to arrive from the manufacturer (usually STAAR Surgical, based in Switzerland). During this time, we prepare your eyes and explain every step so there are no surprises.
On the day of surgery, a small 3mm incision is made at the edge of the cornea. The folded lens is inserted through this incision and gently unfolds into its final position behind the iris. There are no stitches, and the natural cornea is untouched. We use advanced intraoperative visualization to ensure exact placement of the lens.
The entire procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes per eye. Most patients report no pain—only slight pressure or a sensation of light.
Most patients report significantly improved vision within a few hours and are back to regular activities within 2–3 days. The lens is invisible, comfortable, and requires no maintenance.
Unlike surface laser procedures, which may take weeks to stabilize and can cause temporary visual fluctuations, ICL delivers near-immediate clarity. Many patients describe their post-surgery vision as "more vivid than real life."
If you’ve lived with high myopia or hyperopia for years, the change can be emotional. Many of our patients describe it as "seeing the world in HD for the first time."
Clear, sharp vision—often better than what they had with glasses or contacts
Improved night vision with fewer halos or glare compared to LASIK
No dryness, even after long hours at the computer
Active lifestyle without glasses or contact lens hassle
Improved self-confidence and comfort in social settings
One of our patients, a 29-year-old software engineer with -12.00D myopia, said, "I used to dread traveling or swimming because of my thick glasses. Now, I feel free."
Another, a competitive swimmer from Incheon, shared how he now competes without the discomfort of prescription goggles. For him, the ICL wasn't just a correction—it was a competitive edge.
We carefully screen every patient to ensure optimal results. Ideal candidates usually:
Are between 21 and 45 years old
Have stable vision for at least one year
Have severe myopia (worse than -6.00D) or hyperopia (+3.00D or more)
Are not suitable for LASIK due to thin corneas or dry eyes
Are seeking a reversible, long-term correction
However, even if you’re outside this age range, ICL may still be an option. We have performed successful ICL surgeries for patients in their late 40s and early 50s—especially when their goal is to correct distance vision and delay cataract surgery.
Each eye is unique, and we treat every case with individualized care. That means your eye health, lifestyle, and goals will shape our recommendation.
ICL has been performed for more than 25 years with over 2 million successful procedures worldwide. The EVO ICL, now widely used at Gangnam Joeunnun Vision Clinic, includes a central flow port that improves eye fluid dynamics, making the procedure even safer.
Temporary halos or glare
Mild eye pressure changes (easily managed with medication)
In rare cases, early cataract formation
We mitigate these risks through detailed pre-surgery screening, surgical precision, and regular post-operative monitoring. Our use of ZEISS diagnostic imaging allows us to assess microscopic changes that could indicate pressure elevation or lens misalignment.
The Collamer lens itself is designed to last a lifetime. But in the event of a major life change, the lens can be removed or upgraded. That flexibility is a major reason why patients choose ICL over permanent laser treatments.
Every eye is unique. That’s why our approach is never one-size-fits-all. We’ve helped thousands of patients—from busy professionals to students preparing for civil service exams—achieve vision they thought was impossible.
ICL is especially powerful for those who:
Want a reversible procedure
Value long-term vision quality
Prefer a minimally invasive, no-dry-eye solution
